Villany PDO of Hungary welcomes Europe’s best Cabernet Franc makers for the second Franc and Franc Conference in Villany, Hungary. Powerful Cabernet Francs is what this Hungarian wine region is most known for, with being the southernmost, sunny part of the country. The conference is being held on the 18-19th November in cooperation with Villainy’s most famous wine makers and tickets have already sold out, three months ahead the event.
On the 18th November, Elizabeth Gabay MW and Caroline Gilby MW will both be holding masterclasses as part of the programme. Elizabeth, with András Horkay will hold the first session: ‘Positioning the Villány Franc on the world market’ (with 12 wines). This masterclass will be followed by Caroline Gilby and Sasa Spriranec talking on ‘New Europe: Cabernet Francs of Central and Eastern Europe’ (Turkey Chamlija, Bulgaria Edurado Miroglio and Bratanovi, Croatia Degrassi, Slovenia Reya, Romania Balla Géza).
Following a session on Cabernet Franc in Italy, the day will end with a round table discussion on Cabernet Franc.
On Saturday, wine lovers will be visiting many Villany wineries to taste their Cabernet Francs. Darrel Smith from the Drinks Business will report here on the highlights of this event.
Wineries include Heumann whose spicy and indigenous Kekfrankos is already available through the Wine Society, and Hungary’s prestigious Gere Attila Winery and Csányi Pincészet, who are currently looking for distribution in the UK.
