ROVINHUD is a charity event, very close to the heart of Hungarians in Transylvania, a part Old Hungary where the Hungarian language is still widely spoken. With 37 exhibitors and 9 master classes, the event features The ROVINHUD Wine Show. This is a 3 days event organized by volunteers in Timisoara, Romania, to promote quality wine culture, as well as social responsibility.
This year they beat all expectations by raising €20,000 for a very worthy cause. This money will be used to increase community based services for the disabled members of Ceva de Spus Association. Romania and Central and Eastern Europe has genuine poverty. In Romania around 20% of the population are living in extreme poverty, which increases to 44% in rural areas. When one visits the countryside and talks to residents these problems become very real. Poverty is a direct contributor to disability, so until we can deal with poverty these problems continue to grow. Ceva de Spus has 40 members, including people with learning and physical disabilities. The aim of Ceva de Spus is to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, and to support their families through vocational learning, and help young adults into work.
In Timisoara, a Romanian town close to the Hungarian border, 15 people with a variety disabilities participated in organising the Wine Show this year with the mantra “We want respect for our ability, not pity for our disability”.
The wine conference had great content, and an amazing atmosphere. With more than 1000 visitors, 37 exhibitors, 9 master classes, the event was completely sold out! Year after year, the wine experts leave the event, not only impressed, but delighted to have contributed.
Masterclasses were held by: Peter McCombie MW, Patrick Farrell MW, Dr. José Vouillamoz, Luiz Alberto, Christine Havens, Bruno and Daniele Bortolotti from Prosecco Umberto Bortolotti, Barta Károly, from Barta Winery – Tokaj, Imre Szakács-Orha, MW student and funder of the first WSET school in Romania and Stefano Canello from Riedel.
“Rovinhud is a great, small, weekend wine festival which showcases the best of Romania’s wines with a smattering of imports. It’s compact but not crowded, so tasting is easy and there’s a friendly relaxed vibe. There is also a fascinating series of master classes featuring visiting speakers of the calibre of José Vouillamoz. Held in support of disabled self-advocacy group “Something to Say” (“Ceva de Spus”), the festival is largely and efficiently run by members of the group” declared Peter McCombie MW.
“The ROVINHUD Wine Show provides visitors with a high profile selection of producers and speakers who join forces to help disabled people in Romania, all the benefits going to the association Ceva de Spus. I was literally impressed by the fantastic work of Zoli and his team, partially composed of disabled people that I was happy to meet and chat with” Dr. José Vouillamoz, co-author with Jancis Robinson and Julia Harding of Wine Grapes.
During 2018 ROVINHUD will continue to promote the quality wine culture and social responsibility by organizing the fifth edition of ROVINHUD Wine Show on 16-18 November. Should you like to volunteer as a speaker as an importer, expert or in other capcity, please contact Zoltán Szövérdfi-Szép.
“We are very grateful for all who contributed to the success of the event: exhibitors, speakers, visitors, sponsors, volunteers with or without disabilities and everybody who supported us. This year we could see the results of the previous editions and we are happy for the increased interest of the wineries to have and exhibition table, and the increased interest of the visitors to participate at the master classes. We’ll continue our work in the same way: we will select the exhibitors based on quality, and also we prepare again amazing master classes with internationally recognized wine experts.” Zoltán Szövérdfi-Szép, Organiser of the event.
