An unconventional approach to a classical region
By bringing together two generations of the Stumpf family and decades of experience in viticulture and winemaking in the Tokaj region, an out of the box, modern approach to the grapes and the terroir of a historic wine region was born under the 4 Haz (4H) brand.
The initial steps to evolve in wine business and shape the future of the family-owned vineyards were challenging for Miklos Stumpf Jr. After working for decades in the state-owned and then his own vineyards, Miklós Sr imagined an easier career, at least earlier than the daily struggle in the vineyards, for his children. Reality proved then exact opposite, both his son and daughter inherited his passion for viticulture and wine.
After exhausting one office job after another, Miklos Stumpf Jr. eventually earned a degree in oenology and wine-growing and returned to Tokaj to fulfill his passion. Brigitta, his sister, joined him later on and took over the marketing and sales tasks. Under the guidance of Miklos Sr., with his immense experience working with the grapes of the region, and of their mother Julika, with her background in administration and management, they found Chateau Tokaji. The family vinery now labels its wines under the 4 Haz (4H) brand.
They cultivate grapes from the family’s own 16 hectares of vineyards, and also from other local growers, with locations scattered around the historic Tokaj wine region and its municipalities of Sárospatak, Hercegkút, Sárazsadány, Tolcsva and Tarcal. They work exclusively with the three indigenous grapes of Muscat Lunel, Furmint and Hárslevelű and are committed to harvest by hand.
