Boutinot’s Hungarian Discovery

After a fairly extensive mooch around Central and Eastern Europe we’re delighted to be launching our first Hungarian agencies this month. The knowledgeable and ever helpful team at Wines of Hungary introduced us to Nimrod Kovacs, whose winery is located in Eger in the north of the country. Eger experiences a climate similar to Burgundy and Nimrod specialises in varieties which enjoy these cooler conditions. We were immediately struck by the purity and freshness of his Kekfrankos and it’s clear the region has great potential for Pinot Noir.

The second producer we have found is the Kardos winery in Tokaji. This is a family small winery who work almost exclusively with Furmint. From dry and textural single vineyard wines, through to Aszu Tokaji wines which are only made in the best vintages.
Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen increased interest and awareness in Hungarian wine, particularly from the Independent and premium on-trade sectors where there’s an appetite to explore new regions but also for authenticity.

We’re delighted to be launching both producer’s wines at our Autumn Independents’ tastings in Manchester and London next week where we hope the wines will provide a compelling combination of curiosity coupled with great quality and value.
